Did you know that you can invest in real estate with your IRA? A self-directed IRA is a type of traditional or Roth IRA, which means it allows you to save for retirement on a tax-advantaged basis and has the same IRA contribution limits. The difference between self-directed and other IRAs is solely the types of assets you own in the account.
Rental real estate is one of the assets allowed. You will need a Trustee or Custodian IRA Broker who specializes and manages these types of accounts. Once you find a custodian, you’ll open an account and contribute money to it, just as you would with any other IRA.The rental income generated is deposited back into your IRA account. A 1031 Exchange allows an investor to “defer” paying capital gains taxes on an investment property when it is sold, as long another “like-kind property” is purchased with the profit gained by the sale of the first property.
